The beginning of 2020 was very busy for David Grimal with concerts in Europe and Israel with Dissonances as well as with traditional orchestras as artistic director, and in trio with Philippe Cassard and Anne Gastinel In addition he gave master classes for young prodigies in Jerusalem.
This programme was then interrupted by the pandemic. Numerous concerts were cancelled: solos and duets with M.J Jude- the complete set of Beethoven’s sonatas for violin and piano that were to be performed in Arles and Paris- and trios with Philippe Cassard and Anne Gastinel at Salle Bourgie in Montréal.
Projects as artistic director in Brazil as part of the Neojiba project for young Brazilian prodigies supported by the famous pianist Ricardo Castro, in Roumania with the radio orchestra and in France with Metz National Orchestra were also adjourned.
David Grimal was to end 2019-2020 season with Dissonances performing Bartok’s second violin concerto on tour.
However right after the end of the lockdown, this indefatigable creator and musical explorer together with his friend Philippe Cassard imagined and launched Dissonances Chamber Music Series in Dijon, recorded by France Musique.
Last but not least, whereas most festivals were cancelled, he set up a festival celebrating Beethoven in the exceptional setting of Port Royal-in-the-fields which took place at the end of August and made it possible for musicians to perform live after an interruption of more than six months.
Both initiatives were widely acclaimed by media.
At the same time last Summer David Grimal performed in La Roque d’Antheron international music festival.
Season 2020-2021 has begun in a still very uncertain context. David Grimal is determined to carry on his projects as musical and artistic director of Dissonances but in addition with Strasbourg, Nancy, Bilbao, Galicia, Murcia, Bucharest orchestras…
In October 2020 a recording dedicated to Beethoven’s trio with Philippe Cassard and Anne Gastinel was released under the label Dolce Volta and wildly acclaimed with a Diapason d’Or as well as a Choc by Classica.
In fall 2021 another three new CDs will be released: the complete set of Ysaye’s sonatas for solo violin and a double CD with the complete set of Bach’s sonatas and partitas as well as a CD dedicated to Georges Enescu with his string Octet and Caprice Roumain for violin and orchestra. This recording will launched during the 25th International Enescu Festival in Bucharest where David Grimal and les Dissonances will give two concerts around the Rite of Spring, Daphnis et Chloé, Petrouchka…
On the other hand. D.G as artistic director is setting up the International Music Festival of Port Royal-in-the-Fields which is to be launched next Summer… The festival will be dedicated to Schubert.
There will be a lot of international guest artists while Dissonances will perform the complete set of Schubert’s symphonies.
